Drama, Dance, Music and Art

We take great pride in offering our children lots of creative subjects both in and out of the classroom. Our Topic lessons are based around a cross-curriculum carrousel, where we teach a range of skills through Topic, with the aim of developing skills and knowledge of the wider curriculum.

For example, during our Victorian topic we would aim for the children to use the skills they have acquired from the Creative subjects and apply this in their lessons. We would give the children the opportunity to ‘Hot Seat’ Queen Victoria, design and create their own Victorian Invention, paint like William Morris, re-enact scenes from ‘Oliver Twist’ the musical and even compose their own Victorian song.

As of September both KS1 and KS2 offer their children an Enrichment afternoon every Friday, where the children can take part in a variety of subjects, including:

  • Steel Pans
  • Musical Theatre
  • Drama
  • Music
  • Singing
  • Art
  • Design Technology
  • Arts and Craft

The teachers in charge of the Creative Subjects are always on the lookout for More Able and Talented children. Once that child is identified we then offer them a variety of extra-curricular activities. The child, parent or the child’s teacher can show an interest and we would highly recommend them for one of the below clubs:

  • Show Club
  • KS1 Dance Club
  • KS2 Dance Club
  • Singing Club
  • Steel Pan Club
  • KS1 Art Club
  • Christmas Choir Club
  • Craft Club
  • Knitting
  • Christmas Craft Club

These clubs allow the children to ‘shine’; they can work their imagination, be creative and even get the opportunity to show their parents what they have done. Allowing the parents into school gives us the opportunity to showcase their child’s talents.

Each year there is a KS1 and KS2 Christmas performance, a variety of talent shows, a musical competition, a Creative Week and in the future children will be participating in year group celebration assemblies.

We also like to offer the children the opportunity to experience the wider world of the ‘Performing Arts’ industry, which is why we like to take them to local theatres, invite theatre companies in to school and even give the children the opportunity to perform on a ‘real’ stage.

Our creative lessons are cross-curricular and topic based. To see which topics we cover at Morpeth Road, please click here.

If you have any further questions about the Creative Department, don’t hesitate to ask one of the teachers above.
