Our main aim is for the children to develop a positive attitude to mathematics. We want our children to be confident and competent in their ability to use and apply mathematics both in school and in all aspects of their daily lives.
Throughout school, from EYFS to Year 6 pupils are taught how to master maths by using objects and pictures to develop and consolidate their learning. Pupils then progress onto using mental strategies and developing written methods. Whenever possible, maths is taught in a real life context. We follow the national framework for maths where the main aims are:
- Mathematical Fluency (having a secure understanding in numeracy)
- Reasoning Mathematically (being able to explain what they know)
- Problems Solving (to apply their mathematical knowledge in different situations)
Pupils are given regular opportunities to apply their knowledge of maths in situations throughout the day and across the curriculum. In numeracy, we encourage pupils to problem solve, persevere, explain their knowledge and to become confident, independent and interested independent learners.
