Aims and Objectives

Science teaches an understanding of natural phenomena. It aims to stimulate a child’s curiosity in finding out why things happen in the way that they do. It teaches methods of enquiry and investigation to stimulate creative thought. Children learn to ask scientific questions and begin to appreciate the way in which science will affect the future on a personal, national and global level.

At Morpeth Road Primary Academy we believe that children learn best when:

• learning activities are well planned, ensuring progress in the short, medium and long term
• teaching and learning activities enthuse, engage and motivate children to learn, and foster their curiosity and enthusiasm for learning
• links are made across the curriculum
• assessment informs teaching so that there is provision for support, repetition and extension of learning for each child, at each level of attainment
• the learning environment is ordered, the atmosphere is purposeful and children feel safe
• there are strong links between home and school, and the importance of parental involvement in their children’s learning is recognized, valued and developed.

• Science is linked with the class topic where possible to enable a deeper understanding of it and in order to give the work being completed a greater purpose
• appropriate resources are selected to support children’s learning
• resources are provided on a differentiated basis to adequately support the variety of abilities and needs
